How to Stop Dog Barking and Digging

One of the major problems that dog owners face whether they own big dogs or small dogs is the challenge of how to stop dog digging and how to stop dog barking. These are just a couple of the many dog problems that we have to deal with before having a well trained friend.

Dogs bark and dig as a natural instinct so it is not surprising if you have this problem. One of the first goals to stop barking is to find out what makes your dog bark. It could be one of several different things...

  • loneliness
  • intruder in his territory
  • hunger
  • wanting to go outside or come inside
  • playing
  • other dogs in the area
  • kids outside
  • strange noises
  • and more

One of your primary goals should be to identify what is causing the barking and then to address it. It is very important to never correct your dog unless you catch him in the act of doing something you dislike. This can cause great confusion.

As for dog digging, dogs will dig holes for a variety of reasons like being too hot in the summer, burying extra bones or for escape. Just like with barking, your mission should be to catch your dog in the act and see if you can figure out why he is actually digging the hole. Once again, correction should be made then and not 5 or 10 minutes later because he has already forgotten and won't understand what you are talking about.
